On 20 January 2024, JETAA Philippines held its first-ever Nihon Go! session, where former JET ALTs introduced the Japanese language and culture to selected sixth-grade pupils of Doña Josefa E. Marcos Elementary School in Cubao, Quezon City.
The half-day event started with a fun getting-to-know-you activity that prompted the participants to complete their human bingo cards. It was then followed by a lesson on common Japanese expressions, where the pupils got to practice their newly acquired vocabulary through interactive oral tasks.
The session's highlight was an onigiri-making activity, where the children had the opportunity to make their own onigiri in various shapes. They prepared furikake and tuna mayo onigiri—classic Japanese flavors—and chicken adobo onigiri for that Filipino twist. The children made extra rice balls to take home after the program.
To cap off the event, everyone tried their hands at making origami hearts (perfect for Valentine's!) and birds. Each participant went home with a pack of origami paper to help them practice their paper-folding skills and a goody bag of stationery products.
Nihon Go! was a great success in promoting grassroots cultural exchange, this time in the home country of former JETs. The students were fascinated by the beauty of Japanese culture, and the alumni were equally delighted to see the children's enthusiasm and curiosity about Japan.
JETAA Philippines hopes to continue organizing similar events to further promote cultural exchange and community building.
November 23 marks the 5th anniversary of JETAA Philippines!
On November 18, we celebrated this milestone with simultaneous gatherings in Makati City, Osaka City in Japan, and via Zoom.
We are grateful to Mr. Nagata Takuya of J.CLAIR Singapore and Mr. Hitomi Akihiko of the Embassy of Japan for celebrating with us in Makati and to Ms. Kuroiwa Yuka, also of J.CLAIR Singapore, for joining us online. And, of course, we greatly appreciate all of our members who took time off their busy schedules to attend the event in person and virtually from different parts of the Philippines and Japan.
From the small group of returnees establishing the association in 2018, we have grown in number, but more importantly, we have finally found our bearings and are now better equipped and more motivated to attain our goals.
Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the success of JETAA-PH. Your dedication, passion, and hard work have been instrumental in making our association what it is today. Here's to many more years of building connections, advancing Philippines-Japan relations at the grassroots level, and helping more Filipinos become members of the JET PH community!
26 August 2023 - It was a rather gloomy, rainy afternoon, but the participants of the JETAA-PH online calligraphy workshop were full of enthusiasm as they gathered virtually for an opportunity to learn about and try their hand at shodō or Japanese calligraphy.
Ally Ty, a longtime Japanese calligraphy enthusiast whose works have been exhibited in various events, facilitated the event. She showed everyone the proper way of holding the brush as well as executing the basic strokes for beginners during the two-hour workshop.
Each of the participants received an activity kit that included, among others, a bottle of sumi ink, a pack of calligraphy paper, and a brush for beginners. They used these materials in writing the kanji 日 (day), 水 (water), and 月 (moon) for practice.
